3.2. "The Leather-Stocking Tales (Bas-de-Cuir)" de James Fenimore Cooper

Cycle de trois romans qui content les affrontements entre Delawares et Mohicans/Mohegans pro-anglais et les Hurons pro-français : « Last of the Mohicans » (« Le Dernier des Mohicans », 1826), « The Pathfinder » (« Le Lac Ontario, ou Le guide », 1840) et « The Deerslayer » (« Le Tueur de daims », 1841). L’éclaireur Nathanael Bumppo dit « Natty », personnage central de ces récits, apparaît sous les noms de Hawkeye (Oeil-de-Faucon), de Leather Stocking (Bas-de-Cuir), de Deerslayer (Tueur-de-daims) ou de Pathfinder (le Guide) ; c’est un frontalier d’origine européenne, élevé par le Mohican Chingachgook et son fils Uncas. L’action de « Last of the Mohicans » se déroule en 1757 et relate notamment le massacre de la garnison anglaise de Fort William Henry par les Hurons de Magua, avec la bénédiction tacite du général Montcalm. Au cinéma, l'Indien est traité d'une façon positive: "il porte en lui les vertus morales et vaillance physique. Il est vrai qu'à l'instar de Fenimore Cooper le cinéma distinguait - déjà - bons Indiens (Mohicans) et mauvais Indiens (Hurons). En fait le romancier avait distribué les rôles en fonction des alliances avec l'ennemi, les Français, ou avec les Anglais!" (Claude Aziza, Jean-Marie Tixier, Dictionnaire du western, éd. Un sens du tableau et de l’éclairage rare dans le cinéma de l’époque, appliqué à des extérieurs naturels: Tourneur intègre l'action au décor de la nature, belle mais hostile et sauvage. Le film (qui suit très fidèlement le roman) est centré sur l'amour contrarié de Cora et d'Uncas, l'Anglaise et l'Indien, une audace des scénaristes que n'auront ni la version de George B. Seitz (1936) ni celle de Michael Mann (1992), et le personnage de Hawkeye y est secondaire. À la fin, les corps de Cora et de Uncas sont ensevelis dans une sépulture commune. L'ensemble est fortement marqué par le style visuel de Tourneur, mais après deux semaines de travail, celui-ci contracte une pleurésie (ou est victime d'un accident?) et doit diriger la plus grande partie du film en fauteuil roulant ; son assistant Clarence Brown le remplace au pied levé pour les extérieurs, terminant le travail conformément aux indications de son patron (il tourne un bon tiers du film, selon divers témoins). Tourneur comme Brown se heurtent aux grimaces de Wallace Beery, qui ne se laisse pas diriger. Tourné à San Bernardino National Forest (Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead) et au Yosemite National Park (Calif.). Prix du National Film Preservation Board 1995.

Une des meilleures versions du roman, d’après un scénario de Philip Dunne dans lequel le couple formé par Alice et Hawkeye prend le plus d'importance. Tourné en Californie aux RKO-Pathé Studios à Culver City, à Bakersfield (Kern River), à Chatsworth (Iverson Ranch), à Lake Sherwood et à San Bernardino National Forest, avec des Indiens Yurok, Hoopa et Tolowa, et Randolph Scott dans un de ses premiers grands rôles. Au départ, Merle Oberon devait jouer le rôle d'Alice. Michael Mann (auteur de la remarquable version de 1992) considère ce film comme supérieur au roman.

Une adaptation exemplaire, totalement réussie du roman, pour une fois pas traité comme une simple lecture d'adolescents et solidement ancré dans la guerre franco-anglaise (avec des scènes de batailles impressionnantes autour de Fort William Henry). Le couple central est ici formé par Hawkeye et Cora. Chingachgook est joué par Russell Means, responsable de l’American Indian Movement (qui participa au siège de Wounded Knee en 1973). Un récit sans temps morts, superbement photographié, musclé, carré, dépaysant, faisant contraster l’harmonie organique de la vie sauvage avec l’attitude autoritaire des Britanniques qui considèrent les colonies et leurs occupants comme leur propriété. Visuellement inspiré de Catlin et des paysagistes du XIX ^esiècle comme Thomas Cole ou Albert Bierstadt (tournage en Caroline du Nord : Asheville, Blue Ridge Mountains, Chimney Rock Park, Hickory Nut Falls, etc.). La consécration critique de Michael Mann et un triomphe public (coûts : 40 millions $, recettes : 75 millions $). Oscar 1993 (prise de son), BAFTA Film Award (photo, make up, 5 nominations), London Critics Circle Film Award pour Daniel Day-Lewis.
