8.6. Le bandit Dick Turpin

(1706-1739), voleur de grands chemins, braconnier, cambrioleur, meurtrier, pendu à York pour vol de chevaux. Dans le folklore anglais, il est surtout connu pour sa prétendue chevauchée de 320 km en une nuit, de Londres à York sur son cheval Black Bess (épisode rendu célèbre par le romancier William Harrison Ainsworth dans « Rookwood », 1834).

Ici, Turpin découvre un complot pour assassiner le roi George II et effectue sa fameuse course à cheval pour sauver son épouse Joyce et mourir à sa place.
