(1783-1859). « Rip Van Winkle » (1819) – Sleepy Hollow, Nouvelle-Angleterre v. 1760 : pour échapper à sa femme acariâtre, un homme s’endort pendant vingt ans et se réveille au lendemain de la guerre d’Indépendance.
« The Legend of Sleepy Hollow » (1820) – Sleepy Hollow, sur les rives du Hudson en 1799 : le fantôme d’un mercenaire hessois sans tête, jadis au service des Anglais, terrorise les villageois. L’instituteur-détective Ichabod Crane enquête sur ce fantôme qui décapite ses victimes.
