1.5. LA CONSPIRATION D’AARON BURR (1807)

Vice-président sous Thomas Jefferson, le sénateur Aaron Burr (1756-1836) perd toute influence à cause de sa vie privée tumultueuse et des attaques d’Alexander Hamilton (qu’il tue en duel en 1804). Il gagne le Sud où il tente de fonder un Etat indépendant hostile aux Etats-Unis, ce qui lui vaut d’être jugé pour haute trahison (1807). Acquitté, il meurt dans l’indigence. – cf. « The Man Without a Country », nouvelle d’ Edward Everett Hale (1865).

Nolan rejoint Aaron Burr qui veut fondre un nouvelle nation à l’ouest du Mississippi. Jugé, il est incorporé à l’équipage d’un navire et condamné à ne plus jamais avoir de nouvelles de sa patrie et des siens (d’après la nouvelle d’Edward Everett Hale).
