4.3. CHRISTOPHER « KIT » CARSON
(1809-1868). « Mountain Man », éclaireur et guide de John Charles Frémont vers la Californie (Santa Fé Trail, 1842-46), marchand, trappeur et officier, agent gouvernemental auprès des Indiens. Nommé héros national par le président Polk en 1847 après s’être illustré dans la guerre contre le Mexique (siège de San Diego). Participe sous le général Carleton à une campagne dévastratrice contre les Navajos et les Apaches pendant la guerre de Sécession, affamant les Indiens et appliquant une politique de la « terre brûlée ». Bataille d’Adobe Walls (Texas) en 1864 contre les Kiowas et les Comanches. Marié successivement à deux squaws Arapaho, Waanibe et Making Out Road.
