9a.2. WILLIAM CODY dit « BUFFALO BILL »

(William Frederick Cody, 1846-1917), éclaireur et « Indian Fighter ». En 1869, engagé comme chasseur de buffles par la firme Goddard Brothers pour la Kansas Pacific Railroad. Son record : 4280 bêtes tuées en 18 mois, ce qui contribue à affamer les Indiens. Cette même année, rencontre déterminante avec le journaliste NED BUNTLINE (Edward Zane Carroll Judson, 1823-1886) qui invente le personnage de « Buffalo Bill » et fait sa renommée avec ses écrits totalement fantaisistes (« dime novels »). En 1875, un nouveau manager, John M. Burke, transforme Cody de « héros du Far West » en « héros américain de la civilisation ». Homme de spectacle, Cody organise des tournées internationales pendant plus de trois décennies avec le « Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show » auquel sont incorporés Sitting Bull et Annie Oakley. Tournées en Europe (1903-06). En 1908 fusion avec Gordon William Lillie (« Pawnee Bill »), banqueroute en 1913, puis producteur de cinéma (« William F. Cody Historical Picture Company »).

À première vue, une version standard et ultra-sage de la vie de Buffalo Bill, selon l’affabulation de son « biographe » Ned Buntline. Mais Wellman, qui souhaitait sacrifier la légende à la vérité historique (chose inacceptable dans le contexte de nationalisme exacerbé de la Seconde Guerre mondiale), montre aussi le côté ombre de son personnage, jouet des affairistes et des politiciens, plus tard désespéré par la mort de son fils et rongé par la culpabilité envers les Indiens qu’il a contribué à anéantir. Le cinéaste refuse enfin de glorifier l’armée et montre Cody foulant au pied la médaille qu’il vient de recevoir du Président. Un film de commande que Wellman a uniquement accepté afin d'obtenir le feu vert de Darryl F. Zanuck pour son propre projet, le bouleversant "Ox-Bow Incident (L'Étrange incident)" sur le lynchage, que le public américain refusera de voir. De la belle imagerie en Technicolor, avec chevauchées et paysages somptueux. Le film comprend des images empruntées à "Drums Along the Mohawk" de John Ford (1939).

Le « Show Buffalo Bill » est démasqué comme un spectacle creux et mensonger, son initiateur n’est qu’un cabotin vaniteux qui exploite les Sioux intégrés à sa troupe pour sa propre gloire. A Sitting Bull, vieillard silencieux et pathétique (assassiné par la police en 1890), Altman oppose un Buffalo Bill ridicule, mauvais tireur et médiocre cavalier. Tout est show, tout est business. Une parabole cruelle, un spectacle iconoclaste qui s’avère un échec public rétentissant. Le cinéaste contemple "avec une saine férocité la société du spectacle. Ceux qui la créent et ceux qui y croient" (Pierre Murat, Télérama, 8.1.20). Ours d’or au festival de Berlin 1976.
