9a.3. CALAMITY JANE

(Martha Jane Cannary, 1856-1903), aventurière habillée en homme, active à Cheyenne dès 1869. Liaison ou mariée avec Wild Bill Hickok (cf.) à Deadwood, puis avec William Steers et Clinton (Charley) Burke. Contrairement à sa légende et à ses fanfaronnades, elle n’a jamais été l’éclaireur du général Custer ni effectué de périlleuses missions en territoire sioux. Vite expulsée de l’armée (où elle tenta de s’introduire en endossant un uniforme masculin), elle doit son surnom à ses excès de conduite, à ses provocations et à son ébriété persistante. Elle meurt dans la misère à l’âge de 47 ans, ayant vécu les derniers temps de la charité et de travaux de lingerie dans un bordel.
